There has been a lot of talk about gluten for some time now. It seems like sort of a fad that was developed by some sort of celebrity as a weight loss method. It may be true that it can help you lose weight, but I don’t think that should be a motivator for going gluten-free. The reasons are actually much more complex.
There are many people that could benefit from going gluten-free, and most of those people are not aware of that fact, and it is not just for people who have celiac disease. Unfortunately, those people perceive the gluten-free diet as a fad and dismiss it entirely. The truth is that many people with autoimmune conditions such as diabetes (type I and type II), autoimmune thyroid, ulcerative colitis, crohn’s, psoriasis, eczema, MS, ALS, obesity, chronic fatigue syndrome, certain types of migraines, Lupus, fibromyalgia, and many more conditions can benefit form a gluten-free diet. However, the reasons for that fact are complex.
One of the reasons that these conditions are so difficult to deal with is that they are often linked with Hyper Intestinal Permeability Syndrome (leaky gut). This is a condition that is closely linked with gluten, so ignoring this condition would really only tell half of the story.
This next Tues (Dec 6th) I will be presenting these subjects for free at Just Food Coop. I am presenting this, because I want to give a well-researched take on gluten and leaky gut, so that people can make an informed decision about their health. This talk will go into detail about why gluten can be bad for you, how you can find out, and how to help treat these conditions in a natural way. There are many resources that can be found on my blog or on my site .
There is also a gluten free club that meets every other first Tues and the Northfield Hospital. They are actually having a potluck this Mon Dec. 3! If you are interested in tasting many different gluten-free foods, and seeing how easy it is to change your habits without giving up on taste, then please bring a dish to share!
